After fnatic advanced to semi-finals from second place in Group B of ESL Pro League Season 3 Finals, we talked to Dennis "dennis" Edman about their LAN debut with wenton and accomodating him in the lineup.
fnatic started their LAN debut with John "wenton" Eriksson, who is standing in for Olof "olofmeister" Kajbjer until he gets back on his feet, with a win over Cloud9, but fell to domestic rivals Ninjas in Pyjamas on day one.
dennis sheds some light on how the team is using wenton
On day two the Swedes were able to overcome the remaining team in the group, Liquid, in the decider on two maps. We grabbed Dennis "dennis" Edman for a quick interview after fnatic advanced to semi-finals:
First of all, you're in this weird situation with wenton where you don't know when olofmeister is coming back. How have you implemented wenton, is he taking over olof's roles or have you switched roles up?
Actually, it's completely new. He gets new positions, we tried to change the game so that it fits him, as well as it fits us. So he doesn't take olof's roles at all.
How much have you, the other four players, had to change up your positions and roles in order to accomodate him?
Quite a bit, I mean we don't really have tactics based on olof, but it's still his positions and what he does, so we have to improvise in tactics. We tried to keep it as simple as possible so we wanted to keep our roles, but we also changed a lot of positions so we can bring in wenton so that it feels good.
Going into this event, how much preparation have you had with wenton?
Not that much, actually, because we had PlesseN earlier, but he wasn't as experienced as wenton was, and we needed someone with experience. So not really that much, but I think we'll do good anyways.
You have done pretty well so far, you advanced from groups from second place, you played Cloud9 and then NiP, how did you feel about facing your domestic rivals, NiP, after testing the waters against Cloud9?
After the Cloud9 game we could feel that we played kinda sloppy. We weren't on point but we won anyways. When we were going to face NiP, we were confident, of course, but I don't know, as CT we felt good but as T it didn't go our way.
I heard you played some practice games versus G2 just before this event and they beat you pretty convincingly, were you surprised to see them advance from first place?
We actually played three maps and won two, they won only one. But it was still no surprise, they played good and they're getting better every day. They stick together and play a lot, so of course they'd advance. I think they'll do even better in the future.
They are actually the team you will meet in the semi-finals on Saturday, what do you expect from facing G2 considering this is your debut with wenton and they have been looking better these past two days?
It's going to be a hard game, they practice a lot as I said. We need to hit our shots and we could just hope that they don't hit theirs.
After the four teams move to London for playoffs on Friday, fnatic will face G2 in the second semi-final on Saturday, scheduled for approximately 19:40 .
